Astrology to Cosmology

Event Location

Is it astrology, or astronomy? Often, we get mistaken for astrologers here at Kielder Observatory. The two words are similar, yet their meaning is now considered to be realms apart. However, in ancient Babylonia they were one and the same thing. In fact, only over the last 400 years have we really had a clear divide between the science of astronomy, and the spiritual beliefs of how the sky affects our lives.

During this event, we will explore the history of astronomical discovery and uncover more about the origins of where astrology and astronomy and cosmology parted ways. We’ll look at the figures behind these changes in belief, and how their translation of the meaning of the night sky and what lay beyond has evolved as technology has moved on.

From the ancient omen forecasts of the Sumerians, the development of the zodiac, the struggle to uncover the mysteries of a larger cosmic ballet, to the discovery of the telescope. Join us as we pick apart these stories and celebrate astrology for its contributions to our understanding of the cosmos.

Will we get to stargaze?

When the weather permits, we will strive to stargaze using our state of the art large aperture telescopes.  Whatever the weather we will guide you through some of the most spectacular objects in the sky, either virtually or in actuality.

Although stargazing is the priority on all our events, our aim is to deliver a fantastic experience whatever the weather with the help of our team of experienced and passionate astronomers.

How will the event run?

Most events include a topical talk, three tour stations, a hot / cold drink, and some free time. The schedule of running order may change as we react to weather conditions.

Can we still stargaze in summer?

In the summer months we can still observe despite the lighter evenings, including the moon, brighter planets, binary star systems, and the occasional appearance of breathtaking noctilucent clouds.

What else is included?

During the evening you will be treated to a hot drink of either tea, coffee or our famous hot chocolate as well as having the opportunity to support our charity further by taking home a memento of your visit to the observatory from our gift shop.
