Eclipse on the Tyne

About this event

Join Kielder Observatory for Eclipse on the Tyne, a free celebration of the Sun, the Moon and one of nature’s most spectacular sights, a partial eclipse of more than 90%. This is Tyneside’s most spectacular eclipse for generations with the next total eclipse on Tyneside not happening until 2135.  

From 6pm, we’ll gather at the Glasshouse International Centre for Music and Baltic Square on the Gateshead Quayside to watch the eclipse unfold above the iconic foreground of the Tyne Bridge. A special livestream from the path of totality in Spain will be shown on large indoor and outdoor screens.  

Our astronomy team will guide you through the event, with music, family-friendly activities taking place at the Glasshouse and plenty to discover along the way. 

Book a ticket to redeem for a free pair of eclipse glasses in advance to collect from the kiosk at the Glasshouse. Availability is limited and eclipse glasses will be required to join us on Baltic Square for viewing. Eclipse glasses will be available following redemption of your ticket at the Glasshouse collection kiosk, allowing you to safely experience the eclipse with us as it approaches maximum just after 7pm.

Before the main event, a special ticketed talk will also take place at 5pm at the Glasshouse. Tickets cost £15 for adults and £10 for children and must be booked separately.

The main event is free and takes place from 6pm–8pm. If the weather is cloudy, the celebration will continue inside Glasshouse with additional activities and the livestream shown on the venue’s large concourse screen. Tickets will be required for entry, and visiting time may be restricted if capacity is reached. 

Eclipse on the Tyne is presented in partnership with The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, with Go North East as the event’s main sponsor and support from First Light Optics. 

We encourage visitors to travel by public transport wherever possible. Limited paid parking is available at Glasshouse and around the Quayside. 

6pm – Event opening and activities begin in the Glasshouse 

6:10pm – Eclipse begins 

7:07pm – Maximum Eclipse  

7:26pm – Totality in Spain 

8pm – Eclipse finishes and event ends 

Your free ticket guarantees a pair of eclipse glasses. Entry to The Glasshouse and Baltic Square is free, with access managed according to the capacity of each space. Please arrive early, as popular activities and viewing areas may become busy. If activities move indoors because of poor weather, access will be managed on a first-come, first-served basis and cannot be guaranteed.

Please book only the number of tickets you genuinely require. Unusually large bookings may be reviewed and cancelled. If you are booking for a school, community group or other organisation, please contact us in advance.
