“Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here” - Joseph Cooper, Interstellar 2014
My love affair with the night sky began as a young girl. My dad and I would gaze at the stars without the aid of a telescope, identifying constellations and imagining what life might exist beyond our world. Would they be more like dinosaurs or humans? How possible would it be for our two worlds to meet? These wonderings were fuelled by countless Star Trek episodes we watched together. While my friends played with Barbies, I was fascinated by dinosaurs and covered every surface of my bedroom with glow-in-the-dark stars. My curiosity about the universe was sparked early, and it continues to drive me today. Who or what is out there?
During a trip to the Lake District in my teens, I experienced the vastness of the stars within a dark sky area for the first time. It blew my mind. Astronomy quickly became one of my hobbies. Words can’t fully capture the awe I felt when I visited Kielder for the first time, but I kept coming back for more.
In my career, I’ve owned businesses that ran community-focused events, including STEM outreach, and I bring over 10 years of experience in customer service and internal communications. Having been a frequent visitor to this incredible place, it’s an honour to now be a part of the team, supporting their mission to inspire the public in one of Europe’s largest dark sky parks.
