Vacancy - Observatory Manager

Observatory Manager

- We are looking to appoint an experienced manager with a passion for and knowledge of astronomy

We are looking to appoint an experienced manager with a passion for and knowledge of astronomy, to be responsible for the operation of the Observatory and our amazing team of science presenters and volunteers

In 2018 the Kielder Observatory delivered 649 public events at the observatory to over 18,000 visitors, with an average capacity usage of over 90%, and with overwhelmingly positive feedback.

In April 2018 we were delighted to open the Gillian Dickinson Astro-imaging Academy (GDAA).  This is already making our on-site events more varied, comfortable and informative than before

In the early summer of 2018, we piloted a new educational outreach programme that we’ve since rolled out in a series of 20 week-long events for schools in Teesside.  These events are led by members of our team of science presenters, making use of our mobile planetarium.

It is anticipated that our two existing observatory buildings will be enhanced further later in 2019 by the development of a permanent 25-seat planetarium facility.

In the longer term, our vision is to work with our partners in the Kielder Water and Forest Park and the wider Northumberland International Dark Sky Park to create a world-leading centre of excellence for outreach in astronomy, through the creation of a facility that will captivate, enthuse and educate people of all ages to think about their place in the universe.

As part of this longer-term vision, the aim is to have a major expansion of astronomical facilities details of which you will find in the full recruitment pack

What’s the opportunity?

After modest beginnings, Kielder Observatory has grown into a facility with two observatory buildings and a superb array of astronomical equipment as well as two mobile planetariums

We have recently added to our complement of science communicators to support our increasing programme of activities, and now have a team of nine who help to operate the Observatory, and who carry out most of the presenting at our events, both on- and off-site.  After a further review of our staffing requirements, we have now created this new post of Observatory Manager to be responsible for the operation of the Observatory facilities and equipment, and the management of the science team.

This role requires an interest and preferably qualifications in science and astronomy, with experience of managing staff and an understanding of specialist astronomical equipment.  It is an excellent opportunity for further developing a career in observational astronomy as part of a public participation programme, and with associated staff management.

Salary - £31,000 per annum

If you feel you have the necessary astronomical, technical and managerial expertise, energy, a passion for promoting public interest in astronomy and related topics, a willingness to learn and the inter-personal skills required to work with a wide range of staff and partners, we would love to hear from you.

Peter Standfield

Chair of Board of Trustees
