Kielder Observatory is a striking wooden building perched on Black Fell in the middle of Kielder Forest – the largest man-made woodland in England. Our position overlooking Kielder reservoir and surrounded by deep pine woodland makes it a fantastic location to film.

Please download our filming policy here with full information.

Please note we run public events every evening so filming needs to work around our commitments to our visitors. A word of warning – our location is very remote so do your research on accessibility first. Access to the observatory is via a 2-mile track from the main C200 road – it is untarmacked but is well-maintained and is accessible to all vehicles except those with low clearance. We have no running water or mains electricity on site so generally you will need to meet your electricity requirements. There is limited mobile reception on site, although we have Wi-Fi available for you to use. There is ample parking at the top of the track about 80 metres from the main building. Please note drone use will require permission from RAF Spadeadam.

We’ve had local and national news film on site both live and recorded, TV programmes such as Robson Green, local music artists and many more.

For permission for filming in the wider Kielder area, please contact Forestry England, Northumbrian Water or Visit Kielder.
