Internation Year Of Astronomy Web Site

This coming year signifies the onset of IYA 2009. The International Year of Astronomy. Around 400 years ago Galileo trained his home made telescope onto the lunar surface and later on to Jupiter and its moons. Also 40 years ago this year Man landed on the moon. This coming year is a celebration of these events and an attempt by professional and amateur scientists to bring us all together and celebrate this wonderful scence of Astronomy.

As part of this ,we at the Kielder Observatory are launching a series of events aimed at getting the public and our friends and visitors to the facility to listen to the professionals tell their story. each month we will have a guest speaker come to the facility to talk about such conepts as cosmology, answering questions such as "is there an end or a wall to the known universe? also, where did the universe come from? here we will answer these questions, and more importantly you will be able to ask the question that most puzzles you !. So every month throughout 2009. We will start on January 17th at 7pm Dr Juergen Schmoll from Durham University will talk about "The Telescope-400 years of history!" Juergen is an instrumentation scientist an a natural enthusiast, his passion for his subject is inspiring and a natural speaker.

Check out the calendar for events and booking information throughout 2009.
